एक समय की बात है, एक गाँव में रामू नाम का एक गरीब, पर बहुत मेहनती किसान रहता था। रामू का खेत छोटा था और तमाम मेहनत के बावजूद, उसकी फसल कभी अच्छी नहीं होती थी। वह हमेशा सूखे या बारिश की मार से परेशान रहता था।
एक दिन रामू उदास होकर अपने खेत की मेड़ पर बैठा था। तभी, पास के एक बरगद के पेड़ से एक हरा और सुंदर तोता उड़कर उसके कंधे पर आ बैठा। रामू यह देखकर हैरान रह गया क्योंकि तोता इंसानों की तरह बोलता था।
"रामू, तुम इतने दुखी क्यों हो?" तोते ने मीठी आवाज़ में पूछा।
