Tissa was a young man from a wealthy family who decided to leave his comfortable life behind to become a Buddhist monk. He was a dedicated practitioner, but after some time, he fell terribly ill. It started with small pustules on his skin, no bigger than mustard seeds. Over time, they grew into large, painful boils that burst, covering his entire body in open, weeping sores. Eventually, the disease grew so severe that his bones began to weaken and fracture. Because of the constant fluid and blood, his robes became heavily stained and stiff, and his body gave off a terrible, foul odor. Unable to bear the smell and the intense care he required, his fellow monks eventually abandoned him. They carried his bed outside and left him there, completely alone and without a protector.
