Prompt
Breastfeeding is a natural and essential process for infant development, but many mothers experience physical discomfort during feeding, especially in public or hospital environments. Common issues include shoulder strain, back pain, neck bending, and fatigue caused by improper posture and lack of adequate infant support. In many existing nursing chairs, the mother is forced to lean forward or hold the baby’s weight for extended periods, which affects both comfort and health. To address these challenges, this project focuses on designing an ergonomic nursing chair with an integrated chest-level baby sleeping table, ensuring comfort, safety, and ease of use for both mother and child. The proposed nursing chair is designed to support a natural breastfeeding posture, where the baby is brought close to the mother’s chest rather than the mother bending toward the baby. This principle significantly reduces physical strain and promotes relaxed feeding. The chair features a high backrest with adjustable lumbar support, allowing the mother to maintain a neutral spine posture during feeding. The seat and backrest are softly cushioned and contoured to provide long-term comfort, especially for prolonged feeding sessions. A key innovation of this design is the baby sleeping table integrated on the left armrest of the chair. This table acts as a safe, cushioned infant bed, allowing the baby to lie down and even sleep comfortably while feeding. Unlike conventional armrest supports, this table is designed to move very close to the mother’s chest, aligning the infant naturally with the breast. This minimizes the need for manual holding and reduces fatigue in the mother’s arms, shoulders, and wrists. The baby table incorporates a multi-degree-of-freedom adjustment mechanism to accommodate different body sizes and feeding positions. The table can move vertically up and down to match the mother’s breast height, ensuring proper alignment without discomfort. Additionally, the table is capable of rotational movement inward toward the mother’s torso, allowing the baby to be positioned close to the chest. A horizontal sliding motion further fine-tunes the distance between the baby and the mother, enabling precise ergonomic adjustment. Mechanically, this motion is achieved using a combination of cylindrical and prismatic joints. The cylindrical joint allows both rotational and vertical movement, while the prismatic joint enables smooth linear sliding. A secure locking mechanism is incorporated to ensure stability once the desired position is achieved. The movement system is designed to be smooth, quiet, and operable with one hand, ensuring that adjustments do not disturb a sleeping infant. The baby sleeping table itself is designed with infant safety as the highest priority. The surface is soft, padded, and mattress-like, providing proper support for the baby’s body. The table includes rounded edges and slight side supports to prevent rolling, along with a gentle incline toward the mother’s chest to support natural feeding posture. The fabric covering is breathable, washable, and suitable for medical or public environments. The overall chair design follows a minimal, medical-grade aesthetic, making it suitable for hospitals, maternity wards, public nursing pods, airports, and corporate spaces. The materials selected are durable, easy to clean, and hygienic. For added convenience, the chair also includes integrated power and USB ports, allowing mothers to charge devices while feeding. From an ergonomic perspective, this design follows the principle of “bringing the baby to the breast, not the breast to the baby.” This reduces musculoskeletal strain, supports prolonged breastfeeding, and enhances the bonding experience between mother and child. The chair promotes relaxation, reduces physical stress, and provides a secure and comfortable environment for infant feeding. In conclusion, the proposed ergonomic nursing chair with a chest-level baby sleeping table offers a practical, innovative, and user-centered solution to modern breastfeeding challenges. By combining thoughtful ergonomics, adjustable mechanical design, and infant safety features, this project aims to improve the breastfeeding experience for mothers while ensuring comfort and security for infants. This design has strong potential for real-world implementation in healthcare and public spaces, making it both socially impactful and technically feasible.
