Corydoras catfish. The body is short, stocky and slightly laterally compressed, with a wide head and a narrow caudal peduncle. The skin has no scales and is covered by two longitudinal rows of overlapping bony plates on each side; the ventral area is smooth and unarmored. The mouth is ventral and downward-facing. Around the mouth there are three pairs of barbels: one longer maxillary pair and two shorter mental pairs, all flexible, cylindrical and oriented forward. The eyes are large and positioned laterally. The fish has eight fins: one dorsal fin with a strong anterior spine, one small adipose fin behind the dorsal, two pectoral fins each with a defensive spine, two pelvic fins, one short anal fin, and one forked caudal fin. The caudal fin is thin and laterally compressed; it is not flat or wide and appears narrow when viewed from above or below. Overall morphology is clearly benthic, armored, and adapted to bottom-dwelling locomotion.
