Create an ornate rectangular dark wood box with 2:1:1 proportions: twice as long as it is wide, and as tall as it is wide. Style it as a late Renaissance natural-history specimen casket. The box must be built so all four side panels open and drop downward on hinges while the core remains rigid. Use very old, heavily aged wood, nearly black with deep brown undertones, dry, time-darkened, cracked, worn, and matte, with no shine, polish, lacquer, or gloss. Decoration must be fully wood-carved, not engraved or etched: shallow to medium relief carving cut directly into the wood. Cover the lid and all side panels with extremely dense carved ornament, leaving almost no empty space: hybrid beasts, malformed animals, grotesque fish, reptiles, birds, sea monsters, strange humanoids, grotesque masks, claws, scales, wings, and curling foliage. Add dark aged brass or blackened bronze hinges, mounts, clasps, and keyholes.
