Tall, compact 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival psychiatric hospital, later converted in 1938 into an Art Deco blood bank. Approx. 42 m wide x 46 m deep x 26 m tall, with a 32 m central tower, 5 to 6 floors, plus 1 to 2 basement levels. Built upward on a tight Los Angeles hillside lot rather than spread out. Cream hand-troweled stucco walls, red clay tile roof caps, cast-stone base, tall stacked steel casement windows, wrought-iron grilles, arched entry, small upper balconies, and decorative glazed tile panels. The roofline has parapets, vents, tile coping, and a bell-tower-like stair/elevator tower. The later blood bank conversion adds a bronze Art Deco entry canopy, frosted glass doors, black/red terrazzo floors, vertical bronze signage, geometric medical reliefs, and cleaner steel lab windows at the rear. Inside: high plaster ceilings, tile wainscot, terrazzo corridors, old patient rooms converted to donor suites, labs, offices, cold blood storage, and basement service rooms.
