The Ariyamangalam dumping site in Tiruchirappalli is a critical pollution hotspot in Tamil Nadu, releasing leachates laden with lead (Pb²⁺),cadmium (Cd²⁺), and mercury (Hg²⁺) into nearby soil and groundwater. These heavy metals enter the food chain, threatening aquatic life, soil fertility, and human health. Moreover, prolonged exposure to such neurotoxicants disrupts the gut–brain axis, resulting in microbial dysbiosis, neurobehavioral changes, and metabolic stress. Conventional treatment methods such as chemical precipitation, ion exchange, and activated carbon adsorption are costly and less sustainable.
